Challenge: Centralized Filtration Unit for Cylinder Block Honing Machinery

Location: Michigan

Flodraulic’s RHM group was asked by a major manufacturer of automotive powertrain components to solve a filtration problem on an existing engine honing process.

With a facility operating 24 hours a day, 6 days per week, the existing filtration system was failing to meet the customer’s contamination control specifications for removal of fines and oils from the honing operation.

The RHM / Flodraulic team came up with a six layer filtration design down to five micron including both paper and magnetic filters, a coolant temperature control circuit, all stainless steel construction, a labyrinth tank with oil separator and a micro bubbler

To meet the customer’s objectives, ultra-fine filtration modules are supplied with paper media deep-bed paper filter / magnetic style filtration, labyrinth tank with micro bubbler to raise very fine particles and tilting skimmer oil pick-up devices to remove tramp oil from the tank.

Unique to the process is the micro bubbler unit. The micro bubbles attract both oils and fine particles resulting in extremely high levels of filtration (less than five microns) with no need for media.

RHM conducted extensive trials with the Belki oil removal systems over a six (6) week period to ensure that the proposed solution would meet the customer’s tight contamination control specifications.

The RHM / Flodraulic multi-layer filtration system can be used in a wide variety of applications including honing, grinding, lapping, washing and polishing.
